Superior Performance Through Technology

As the pioneer in wireless accessories for two-way radios, FreeLinc is constantly working to deliver products that make your job safer and easier...products you rely on every day.

That's why FreeLinc has chosen to use the latest generation of near-field magnetic induction technology for it's pioneering line of wireless accessories for two-way radios.

Magnetic Induction Communication

In our efforts to develop the industry's first wireless accessory for two-way radios, testing revealed that all the commonly used radio frequency (RF) technologies (e.g., Bluetooth) were not up to the challenge of providing highly reliable and secure wireless communication between an accessory and a two-way radio. After extensive searching and testing, FreeLinc determined that the properties of magnetic induction technology were best suited for the challenge.

While the concepts behind magnetic induction communication are not new, the unique formulation of magnetic induction that we've chosen (called Near-Field Magnetic Induction) is the first to capture the benefits of this technology for use in short-distance personal communications.

Conventional radio frequency (RF)-based wireless communication systems have seen great success when applied to sending large amounts of data and for communicating over long distances. However, the inherent structure of the RF spectrum results in interference and crowding among devices, creates information security issues, and consumes a great deal of power. A good example of this problem is in the 2.4 GHz industrial/scientific/medical (ISM) band where the simultaneous operation of a cordless phone, a WiFi network and a Bluetooth device is often impossible without severe degradation in the quality of the transmission.

Near Field Magnetic Induction, on the other hand, does not communicate using the RF properties of the electro-magnetic spectrum. Instead, it uses the magnetic field close to the transceiver (the "Near Field") to sustain communications. Since NFMI does not rely on RF-based transmission for communication, it is immune to interference from nearby RF sources. By expanding and modulating this Near-Field, or what we call the "personal communications bubble", NFMI envelops the personal space of each user and is therefore inherently private and secure. Additionally, NFMI is a system that makes far more efficient use of power - over 5 times more power efficient than typical RF-based systems.

By encapsulating the transmission within the "bubble", and by limiting the range to only what the application requires, Freelinc achieves the significant benefits of:

* Dedicated communication channels
* No bandwidth sharing
* Complete frequency re-use between bubbles
* Reliable coexistence with WiFi, CDMA, TDMA. and GSM
* A very substantial savings in power

Benefits for the User

Greater Reliability.
The RF band at 2.4GHz is an extremely 'crowded' portion of the radio spectrum, and frequent signal conflicts can be expected. Conversely, near-field magnetic communication technology typically operates in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical band at 13.5 MHz - minimizing both spectrum contention and interference to and from other devices.

Superior Security.
The physics of near-field magnetic induction ensure that transmissions do not propagate beyond the "bubble". By combining this with digital encryption, FreeLinc products ensure unparalleled security of communications.

Lower Power Consumption.
With signals designed to propagate only within a 2-meter range, magnetic communication has a huge power and battery advantage (up to 6X) over Bluetooth and other competing RF solutions.

FreeLinc User Testimonials

To whom it may concern; I purchased the Freemic 200 at the beginning of 2007 and have been using it 5 days a week since then. I could not be more satisfied with its performance. Sound quality is outstanding and battery life is phenomenal. Great Product.
- Keith Pascarella - Monroeville Police Department - Monroeville, PA

"I have had my mic for approximately 8 months. I was the first officer with my department to test the mic. I was unfortunate to be in three foot pursuits while testing the mic. I was very impressed with my new mic !!! With the old mic (the cord) always came loose from my uniform and fell to the ground leaving me unable to transmit to my dispatch. With my FreeLinc mic I was able to transmit and the mic held to me and my uniform like a champ. I think the FreeLinc mic is a very valuable tool for law enforcement. The mic is definitely made for officer safety and is very officer friendly. I expect to see great things from FreeLinc. After testing the mic midland county sheriffs' office purchased a mic for each patrol man and the midland county swat team. I have spoken with the guys (patrol deputy's and swat team) they think the mic is great. Thank you so much for inventing an item that makes my job easier. "
- Kris Hoban, Patrol sergeant, Midland County Sheriff's Office

"I currently evaluate new communications technology for LAPD. I have never seen anything like the FreeLinc FreeMotion 200 wireless headset. I have tested the FeeMotion 200, and we are very excited."
- Hugo Goa, City of Los Angeles, ITA Communications

"Our Special Operations Unit thoroughly tested the FreeMotion 200 headset. We found it to be reliable in all sorts of environments; we really put it through the ringer. It allowed our undercover officers to communicate while maintaining their cover and it worked great for the back-up officers."
- George Mumma, Special Operations Unit, Jefferson County (CO) District Attorney's Office

"In a tropical climate such as Hawaii, it takes quality equipment to do a quality job. As an emergency responder with the Oahu Civil Defense Agency in Honolulu, Hawaii we heavily rely upon our communication equipment to keep us functional in times of disasters. I have used the FreeMic200 for a few months and I have discovered the amazing features and benefits of working with this product. Overall the FreeMic200 performs well beyond the traditional speaker mics in features, and also with the benefit of a light-weight and cord free style. Overall I am very pleased with this Freelinc product and can't wait to see what your company has to offer in the future."
- Nelson Toda, Oahu Civil Defense Agency, Honolulu, Hawaii

“I am a Paradise Valley Motor Officer and was assigned to the Presidential detail a few weeks ago during President Bush’s visit to our town. Most of our team was equipped with the FreeMic 200 cordless microphone with earpieces which came in really handy since we were dealing with several protesters who stated they were going to charge the motorcade when the President left the resort. The staff was able to pass valuable information onto all officers dealing with the protesters without them knowing we were receiving this important information. We didn’t need to brief each officer one at a time taking them away from the front line with the protesters. All received the same information at the same time. Needless to say the protesters did not charge the motorcade since we were ready for them. The FreeMic 200 made a tremendous difference in this case – which I am sure will be as useful for other important details in the near future."
- Officer Kevin Albert, Paradise Valley Police, Arizona

“The FreeMotion™ 200 is a multi-use technology. I use the wireless headset during special events and other high noise activities, as well as for dignitary protection. It has superior volume quality for high noise environments and is also the perfect device for executive protection routine where privacy and stability are of the foremost priority.”
- Joseph Nardella, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Massachusetts State House Branch

"We have recently acquired the Freelinc cordless microphones for our patrol division and it was like Christmas in July for the Deputies. They are proving to be a valuable piece of equipment, and one more tool to provide safety and convenience for our officers on the road. In the short time we have had them I have already received letters of appreciation from the Deputies for caring enough to get the Freelinc mics for them."
- Jack Merritt, Sheriff, Greene County Sheriff's Office.

"FreeMotion 200 headsets were a perfect fit for the DPS. In addition to performing remarkably well, their small size and light weight made them comfortable to wear—I actually forgot I was wearing mine. What’s more, their hands-free convenience and tangle-free safety let us maintain communication while keeping full focus on the environment surrounding our guest."
- Steven Healy, Chief of Police, Princeton University Department of Public Safety

“Our guys like the flexibility, the advantage of not having the wire, and the freedom that the FreeMotion™ 200 allows.”
- Captain Ambrose, Danvers Police Department, Massachusetts

-------  Frequently Asked Questions  -------

How long does it take to charge the battery in my FreeLinc accessory?

3.5 to 4 hours for a complete charge. The LED on the accessory will turn from red to green indicating a complete charge. The LED on the accessory will not illuminate when unplugged from the charger.

Can I just leave my accessory plugged into the charger all the time when I am not using it?

You can leave it plugged in over night or for 8 to 10 hours at a time, but any extended period of time on a regular basis is not recommended and can cause premature battery failure. Removal from the charging source after complete charging is the best practice.

How long does a battery charge last on my accessory?

A fully charged battery should last around 20 hrs on a FreeMotion 200 and around 50 hours on a FreeMic 200. Since we don’t use a “sleep mode” or other power-saving features in order to ensure always-ready communication, you should experience roughly the same talk time with each charge.

How is the adapter powered?

The adapter gets its power from the radio. Since the FreeLinc adapter uses very little power, you may lose roughly 15 minutes of battery life on your radio per duty cycle, when used with a battery that is in good working condition.

How much separation can you have between the accessory and the adapter and still maintain the link?

The range is roughly 3 to 5 feet.

Since FreeLinc accessories use magnetic induction, will proximity to metal degrade the communication link?

Metal can either enhance or degrade the performance depending on its location. For example, in a car, the surrounding metal can enhance the performance of the magnetic field. However, a metal wall placed between the accessory and the adapter would drastically reduce the capability of the link.

What happens if you go beyond the 5-foot range and lose the link between that accessory and the adapter?

When the accessory is out of range of the adapter, the accessory starts to beep and the LED on the adapter blinks RED indicating the loss of the link. When the accessory and the adapter are brought back within the 5-foot range, the link will be re-established as evidenced by the GREEN blinking LED on the Adapter.

What happens if I misplace or lose my Accessory and need to use my radio to communicate with others?

The adapter is equipped with an ON/ OFF switch. The switch can easily be turned to the OFF position, at which time the radio functions as if the adapter were not on the radio. In this way, you can have full and complete functionality of the radio without having to stop and remove the adapter.

What happens if you have a group close together in a room or on the job? Will this effect the operation of all the accessories in the group?

Generally not. When two accessories get close together, the magnetic fields merge and become one. For this to occur, the two people need to be extremely close - for example, in a bear-hug. At this time, our products are designed with the ability to have two people successfully communicate inside one magnetic field. If a third person were to enter the field, one of those in the field would lose their link. The person who lost the link would be immediately aware of the loss because of a beeping on the accessory. This can be easily remedied by the individual who has lost the link taking a step back. The link will immediately be restored at that time. Remember, you have to be extremely close to another person to be in their field. With all of the tests that we have performed, and with all of our existing customers, this problem has never been reported. Also, when an accessory and an adapter are paired, they exchange a unique and individual ID and they only look for each other. Therefore your accessory will not recognize any other adapter other than the one with which it is paired. This prevents any rogue links and or transmissions.

What is the warranty on my FreeLinc product?

The warranty on all FreeLinc products is 1 year parts and labor for the original purchaser of the product.

What happens when the original battery wears out? How do I get it replaced?

When the battery fails to hold a charge outside of the warranty period, the accessory may be returned to FreeLinc, where the battery will be replaced for a fee of $69.95. This new battery will have a warranty of one year from the date of replacement.

My accessory will not pair with my adapter. What do I do?

While extremely rare, it is possible for the accessory to fail to pair with its adapter. Should this problem occur, a “forced pairing” procedure can resolve it. For complete instructions on this procedure visit our knowledgebase at the factory website.

How do I get a new Operator’s manual?

Go to the factory website to download a new version of your User Manual.

Can I charge my accessory through the USB ports on my computer?

No you cannot. The levels on other USB ports are not the same as they are on our charging cables. Doing so could cause damage to your FreeLinc accessory and in extreme cases may present a fire hazard.

Do I need to modify my radio in any way for your products to work?

No, you do not. The only requirement is that we must offer an adapter that fits on your radio model. This is no different than other wired accessories you may have used.

How do I turn my accessory ON and OFF?

FreeLinc accessories do not have ON and OFF switches on them. When the accessory continuously fails to find its paired adapter for approximately 2 minutes, it will turn OFF (go to sleep) automatically. To turn the accessory ON (wake it up), you simply press the Push to Talk button located on the accessory.

How do I get literature on your products?

Visit the factory website Downloads section for a complete list of literature and related material.

Will my accessory communicate with more than one adapter?

NO. When an accessory and an adapter are paired, they exchange a unique and individual ID which ensures that they will only communicate with each other. Therefore your accessory will not communicate with any other adapter other than the one with which it is paired. This prevents any rogue links and or transmissions.

What if I break or lose my accessory? Can I buy the accessory only, or do I always need to buy the accessory and adapter as a set?

Yes, you can buy accessories without adapters. You can also buy adapters without accessories.

How or where do I push to talk?

There are two ways to Push To Talk (PTT) with FreeLinc Accessories. First, there is a PTT button located on the accessory itself. On the FreeMotion, the PTT is found on the ear bud, and on the FreeMic the PTT is found on the side. Second, there is a PTT button located on the top of the adapter that is attached to the radio. These two PTT locations give the user the flexibility of using which ever option is best for them.

Do I have to re-pair my accessory and adapter every time that I turn the radio off? Or every time the battery dies?

No, not if the units have already been paired. Once the accessory and adapter have been paired, they exchange a unique ID. Turning the radio or the accessory off will not cause the unique IDs between the units to be lost. When the devices are powered up the pairing is re-established automatically in a matter of seconds. On rare occasions, the pairing could be lost. If this does happen, all that is required is to follow the "Forced Pairing Procedure" that is listed on the factory website.

Can I use the same adapter with FreeMotion headsets, FreeMic speaker-mics, and any other FreeLinc accessories?

Yes, you can. All FreeLinc Accessories are compatible with any of the Adapters.

How will I know when my battery is getting low?

Our accessories are designed with a low battery audible indicator.

Can I charge FreeMotion headsets and FreeMic speaker-mics with the same charger?

Yes, FreeLinc chargers are interchangeable and can be using for any of our products.
